Aspire Development has partnered with English Heritage Trust to understand their organisational needs and deliver the Level 5 Management Apprenticeship.

Charlotte Malthouse, a Belsay Hall Cluster Manager at English Heritage Trust, shares her experience on the apprenticeship, highlighting how the skills she has developed have benefited her in the workplace.

The skills developed on the apprenticeship

Prior to starting the apprenticeship programme, Charlotte had been in an operations manager role for a number of years. She says, “I was already feeling comfortable and confident with my role. The reason I decided to complete this programme is because I wanted to continue my learning and personal development to become a stronger leader/manager.”

“I definitely feel that my expectations of this programme have been met.”

We asked Charlotte what skills she felt she had developed whilst on the apprenticeship programme, and if these were helpful to her in her role. She explains, “Going back over basic skills such as time management, learning styles and managing change all came at a crucial time during the delivery of a project that was significant to English Heritage.”

She concludes, “Going back through the different models and talking to my peers about how they would handle different situations was incredibly helpful!”

Exciting career development

During the apprenticeship, Charlotte’s skills and capability had been recognised and she was promoted to the role of Cluster Manager for the Belsay Hall team. This meant that she was now responsible for a large number of sites and it was her job to support the site managers.

Charlotte explains, “The skills that I acquired during this programme were vital in not only my own self confidence in going for this role but being able to demonstrate them at interview. I had to talk about how I would manage multiple teams, some of them at a distance which was a topic that we had covered during this apprenticeship.”

We are incredibly proud of Charlotte’s achievements, both on this apprenticeship and her successful career development within her organisation.

Direct impact into the organisation

Charlotte Malthouse has had a very successful time on the apprenticeship and this positive impact can be directly seen in the workplace and by her peers. We managed to get a few words from Charlotte’s line manager on her progress after completing the apprenticeship.

Her line manager says, “Charlotte has grown in confidence in a number of areas, but in particular with her decision making, people management and in relation to the financial sustainability & profitability of her sites. As a result, Charlotte is developing into a very well-balanced manager as she consciously considers the impact of her decisions on business performance as well as her team/people.”

Her line manager continues, “Charlotte is now focusing on how she can be an influential leader with colleagues across the wider organisation to ensure that both appropriate and proportionate discussions take place involving the future development of her sites and people.”
