The essential qualities every training manager should have

Liz O’Connell, Leadership Development Consultant at Aspire Development shares her top tips for training managers, to ensure they are at the top of their game. These are the qualities she believes we should all aspire to reach.

  1. Have the right balance of EQ (Emotional intelligence) and IQ (knowledge-based intelligence). It is essential that a training manager is aware of their own strengths and weaknesses so they can prioritise their own development.  Being able to manage their own emotions when working alone or communicating with others is critical when building positive relationships.  Knowledge of their field of expertise as well as the leadership and training arenas will help them continually be at the forefront of new initiatives, lead others effectively and be able to accurately identify and address learning needs.
  2. Passion – this is their own desire to continually learn, stretch themselves, be creative, achieve outcomes, build empowering relationships as well as instil those qualities in their colleagues, learners, or delegates. By having this passion and drive they will continually be building on their self-belief, knowledge, skills, and capabilities.  Delving deeper, these skills might include problem solving, decision making, organisation, change management and resilience to name but a few.
  3. Expert communicator. To have the ability to communicate effectively at all levels using questions, listening, influencing, providing feedback, coaching, and using a range of formats such as face to face, virtual, hybrid, verbal and written methods.

These are my top 3 qualities of a training manager.   Interesting they also compliment the Aspire Development values which are Focused on you, Passionate about learning and Proud of shared success.  Many training manager roles differ significantly and therefore the qualities required will alter.   I’d been keen to read about what your top 3 would be.
