What is Thought Leadership?

This blog explores where the idea of thought leadership was derived from and what it means for leaders today.

There’s a statue in Athens (just outside the National Academy building), it depicts a bearded man with his hand pressed against his face and looking down deep in ‘thought’.

What Socrates is doing is what most people do when they think about anything, they are tapping into the talent, knowledge, skills, behaviours, passion, creative and experience they have in order to solve their problem.

Ultimately, the result will be the deepest and best answer an individual can come up with because the subject will be an area of expertise for that leader. But mastering thought leadership takes patience, a knowledge of the bigger strategic picture, dedication and a good level of education.

You’ll be able to spot a thought leader quite quickly, they’ll be the ones that are passionate and knowledgeable about their area, they will happily share their knowledge with others. They can be very inspiring that’s why you might see people like Simon Sinek coming up a lot on social media – they are the types whose purpose in life is to stretch your thoughts and encourage deeper thinking much like Socrates, after all, he did say “We cannot live better than in seeking to become better”.

So take some time out when given a problem – think and share your thoughts you never know what might happen.
